Top Architecture Firms in New York

June 1, 2020 by Brandon Richard Auston

New York City architecture firms have created some of the world’s most iconic structures. They provide a unique glimpse into the past. Today, we’ll take a look at 20 of the most prominent New York architecture firms as curated by industry experts at Arch Paper.

Founded in San Francisco in 1965, Gensler now operates in more than 100 countries and employs 6,000+ people. Although their original focus was corporate interiors, today, Gensler’s architecture portfolio ranges from airports to educational facilities and entertainment complexes. While they’re still headquartered in San Francisco, Gensler’s New York City office employs more than 600 employees and is what’s known as a “smart office,” highly customized by the firm.

In addition to being one of the best New York architecture firms, HOK is considered one of America’s most innovative companies of any kind.  One of their most impressive feats in the industry was the development of HOK STREAM, a proprietary tool that relies on parametric modeling and structural analysis to determine whether building designs are feasible. With the help of this tool, HOK has designed some of the most jaw-dropping structures in America, just as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s twin 900-foot canopies.

Among SOM’s most impressive work is One World Trade Center in Manhattan — a project many New York City architecture firms vied for in the 2000s, following the tragedy of September 11, 2001. While the project’s historical significance makes it one of SOM’s most visible, the rest of their portfolio is equally impressive; they designed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. In addition to being the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is an architectural masterpiece, geometrically inspired by a local desert flower.
