Educating Construction’s Next-Gen Workforce

July 19, 2023 by Anna Toon

While the recent passing of the trillion-dollar infrastructure bill provides critical funding for public works projects, the need for skilled workers to meet the demands of these projects is becoming increasingly more pronounced.

The retirement of older workers combined with the lack of resources for training means that organizations are left scrambling to find the talent they need. With far reaching implications, such as increased construction costs and project delays, addressing the scarcity of qualified individuals to meet the growing demands of infrastructure development and maintenance is crucial, and tech proficiency is no longer optional.

As the construction industry continues to adopt technology to operate more efficiently amidst the ongoing labor shortage, forward-thinking universities are implementing a proactive approach to bridging the skill gap between academic learning and real-world construction practices to meet the demand for more skilled labor.

By training students on the digital workflows and technologies that are increasingly prevalent in the industry, universities like Cal Poly and Texas A&M are equipping future construction professionals with the tools to streamline communication, track progress, and execute projects more effectively. This type of collaboration between academia and industry allows universities to meet the evolving needs of the construction industry while ensuring graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce.

In addition, graduates entering the job market are increasingly seeking opportunities with companies that embrace technology and innovation. As more and more students learn the Procore platform, organizations that have already adopted Procore gain a competitive edge in the labor market as they are more likely to appeal to top talent. By positioning themselves as industry leaders, they set the stage for continued success and growth in the future.

Launched in 2016, Procore.org is paving the way for the next generation workforce to address our ongoing infrastructure needs. Today, more than 250 universities are leveraging free access to Procore’s platform and educational resources to ensure students have the necessary skills, training, and certifications to excel in the industry and successfully develop our communities.

If you are an educator and would like to obtain a free Procore account for your school, please visit procore.org or email procoreorg@procore.com for more information.
