Modernizing workflows to support enterprise growth

The Challenge

As Mortenson expanded into new regions and sectors, its legacy systems struggled to keep pace. Project teams navigated siloed tools and outdated processes, which complicated decision-making, slowed collaboration, and introduced unnecessary risk across high-stakes federal and commercial builds.

The Solution

To meet this challenge and help support the company as it grows, Mortenson launched a bold, multi-phase ERP modernization initiative to move its core operations into the cloud. At the center of that strategy was Procore, chosen to unify project and financial management, improve data visibility, and provide a single source of truth across the company.

The Results

  • Reduced risk with embedded analytics and real-time dashboards, helping teams address issues before they escalate
  • Scalable standards through streamlined company-wide standards to ensure consistency across regions and business units
  • Transparent collaboration with clients through shared inspections, corrections, and documentation residing in one platform
  • Unified Data Ecosystem with quality, costs, and change events in a single system, reducing duplication and improving visibility.

Having access to all that data in one place helps us mitigate risk. We can see leading indicators — like if something’s falling behind — and step in before it becomes a bigger issue.

Reinvention at Scale

Known for building projects from wind farms to stadiums, Mortenson—ranked #27 on the 2024 ENR 400—has long been a pioneer in construction innovation. But as the company grew into new markets and geographies, it became clear that a patchwork of legacy systems could no longer support the scale or pace of its business.

"It was a transformational moment for the company. We weren’t just changing systems—we were changing how we work," says Dan Whaley, Project Executive at Mortenson.

Mortenson’s response was bold and forward-looking, as it initiated a company-wide systems transformation. Rather than focus solely on upgrading technology, Mortenson reimagined how the business operated from the inside out. Teams across IT, operations, and finance worked in lockstep to drive systemic change, using the initiative to modernize workflows, eliminate silos, and foster greater collaboration.

One Hub, End-to-End

With Procore already familiar to many teams, Mortenson recognized the opportunity to build a fully integrated platform for project delivery and financial management. By extending its use of Procore beyond traditional PM tools, Mortenson centralized everything from change events and commitments to cost control in one environment.

"The biggest benefit is being able to operate from a single hub. Now our teams don’t have to jump between systems to manage financials or track project performance. It’s all in one place," remarks Whaley.

Procore also played a vital role in migrating critical legacy data, ensuring project teams had full access to historical information without having to juggle multiple platforms. Regular strategy check-ins and roadmap sessions with Procore kept the partnership aligned and responsive to Mortenson’s evolving needs.

"We had regular check-ins with Procore to discuss what was coming and what we needed," Whaley says. "It was a true partnership."

By consolidating tools and workflows into a single digital workspace, Mortenson simplified its technology stack, improved data reliability, and made it easier for teams to access and act on the information that matters most.

Standardizing for the Future

With operating groups working across diverse sectors—including federal, energy, and commercial—Mortenson faced the ongoing challenge of maintaining consistency at scale. The ERP project created an opportunity to step back and reestablish shared standards for how projects should be delivered.

Procore became the common ground for aligning teams on expectations and best practices. By streamlining processes and introducing scalable standards, Mortenson ensured that every project, regardless of location or sector, could be managed with the same rigor and efficiency.

"As a large company spread across many markets, we needed to unify how we work. This initiative helped us establish a shared standard,” Whaley says.

From Insight to Action

Embedded analytics have given Mortenson a powerful edge in decision-making. With Power BI dashboards integrated directly into Procore, project teams and leadership now have real-time visibility into performance trends, risks, and operational bottlenecks.

In federal work—where delays in submittals or unresolved change events can carry significant consequences—this visibility is crucial. Mortenson uses leading indicators to identify potential issues early, investigate root causes, and take corrective action before those issues escalate.

The result: better risk mitigation, faster response times, and greater confidence across teams."Having access to all that data in one place helps us mitigate risk," says Whaley. "We can see leading indicators and step in before it becomes a bigger issue."

With a unified platform that connects people, processes, and data across the organization, the company is equipped to adapt quickly, scale sustainably, and drive long-term growth.

As project complexity continues to rise, Mortenson’s digital foundation ensures it can lead with innovation, clarity, and confidence. The company’s transformation journey proves that with the right platform and a true partnership, builders can do more than keep up—they can shape the future of construction.
