From local contractor to billion-dollar builder

The Haugland Group story spans multiple generations. What began as a family-owned regional contractor is now a billion-dollar leader in heavy civil and electrical infrastructure, with 1,500 employees and projects stretching from the Northeast to Florida and the Virgin Islands. Through it all, Haugland is proud to have remained a family owned-and-operated business.

But along with that growth came complexity. Each operating division had its own processes and software tools, creating data silos that hampered visibility. “We were using a project management platform inside our ERP, but adoption was uneven,” said President and COO JJ Haugland. “We needed a unified system where everyone could collaborate and where leadership could see the big picture.”

Procore provided the structure Haugland needed to scale while maintaining consistency and accountability. Standardized processes ensured teams across divisions were working the same way. Centralized data gave leadership a clear, real-time view of project health, smoothing the path to less-complicated growth. “Having a family business, we have family values built into our culture,” Haugland said. “As we scale across new geographies, Procore helps us keep that culture intact.”

Today, Haugland uses Procore to manage the entire project lifecycle — from estimating and preconstruction through closeout. With all information housed in one system, the company can see how financial, schedule, safety, and quality metrics connect to tell the full story of a project’s performance.

“Anytime you can get all the information in one spot, you can actually see how it correlates,” Haugland said. “You’re able to identify what’s working well and replicate it — and just as quickly spot issues and correct them.”

That visibility has been transformative. In one case, a project that appeared healthy financially was quietly slipping in schedule. With Procore’s analytics, leadership spotted the issue early — nearly ten months before it would have become a problem. “The financial picture looked fine, but the schedule told a different story,” Haugland said. Workers were speeding through easy parts of the schedule, but more challenging days ahead threatened to put the entire project behind schedule if adjustments weren’t made soon. “We were able to intervene within days instead of months and get the project back on track.”

By tying schedules, budgets, and performance indicators together, Haugland now has a clearer understanding of productivity trends. The company can see which teams or project types consistently outperform and use those insights to inform new bids. “The ability to see what’s been successful and scale up has allowed us to grow our customer base and take on more complex work,” Haugland said.

Haugland’s partnership with Procore has evolved into true collaboration. JJ serves on Procore’s Customer Advisory Board, helping shape the product roadmap. The company regularly tests beta features, providing feedback that drives innovation across the platform.

“The collaboration with the Procore product team has been very natural,” Haugland said. “We challenge each other, hold each other accountable and make the product better for everyone.”

Access to new tools and early beta programs keeps Haugland ahead of the curve. “Having that visibility into where the product is headed lets us stay aligned,” Haugland said. “It ensures our teams are ready for the next evolution in construction technology.”

Today, Haugland continues to expand its use of Procore, exploring AI-powered features that will help to enhance scheduling, forecasting and risk management. The company sees technology not as a replacement for people, but as a multiplier of human expertise. “Our industry is changing fast,” Haugland said. “By combining the wisdom of experience with the power of data, we can accomplish more with the same resources.”
