Galvanic corrosion

An electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially when in electrical contact with a different type of metal.

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of an electrolyte, leading to accelerated corrosion of one metal. It is crucial for optimizing material compatibility, reducing maintenance, and supporting system longevity. By understanding and mitigating galvanic corrosion, designers ensure that systems are well-designed, aligned with design specifications, and capable of meeting performance criteria, contributing to successful project delivery by ensuring that materials are well-protected, aligned with design specifications, and compliant with environmental and regulatory standards.

Used in a sentence

Galvanic corrosion was prevented by using dielectric unions between dissimilar metals.
