In an industry often characterized by tradition and caution, Felipe Dominguez of Suffolk is part of a new wave of leaders, driving an ancient industry into the digital era. As part of Suffolk’s Construction Technology team, Felipe is helping reimagine how projects are delivered, blending innovation with practical adoption strategies that empower field teams.
For Felipe, the passion for building started early. Growing up in Chile, he spent his childhood on job sites owned by his father’s construction company. “Some of my earliest memories are visiting job sites, watching how people come together to build something from scratch,” he recalls.
That early fascination led him to study civil engineering, where he learned about innovations in construction tech -- like Building Information Modeling (BIM) -- that were transforming the industry. “BIM got me completely hooked,” he says. “I realized technology had the power to reshape how we build and how construction works.”

Bridging Tradition and Innovation
Felipe’s career has been defined by solving one of construction’s biggest challenges: the gap between new technologies and real-world adoption.
“Driving change in construction is not as simple as just saying, ‘let’s use a new technology.’ There are cultural barriers and resistance to change," Felipe says. "People are building under tight budgets and deadlines—it’s not easy to just start something new.”
Rather than seeing that resistance as a roadblock, Felipe embraced it as motivation. When he joined Suffolk in 2022, he found an environment where innovation wasn’t an afterthought.
“Working with Suffolk and engaging with major construction technology companies in the US, I discovered an environment where innovation is intrinsic to the company's DNA.
Being part of Suffolk's Construction Technology and Operational Excellence departments felt like finding my true calling. My role now is to help shape the jobsite of the future and address emerging challenges through technological solutions.”

Suffolk’s Operational Excellence and Construction Technology departments exist to make new tools practical, accessible, and aligned with project outcomes.
Adoption Through Empowerment
For Suffolk, technology adoption isn’t about mandates – it’s about building buy-in through dedicated support. The company has created first-line champions tasked with troubleshooting issues, gathering feedback, and ensuring teams see the value of the tools in their day-to-day work.
“While early adopters and tech-savvy employees in the field are crucial champions, widespread adoption only occurs with structured support for project teams. This is where our Construction Technology department, a division of Operational Excellence, comes in.
We have a dedicated team of regional employees that we call 'Construction Technology Deployment Associates.' These team members are embedded in our regions, building direct relationships with project teams, and serving as the first line of support for driving technology adoption and implementation. They are deeply connected to the teams, providing on-the-ground support and gathering essential feedback on gaps and challenges.”

The approach extends beyond Suffolk’s walls. Felipe prefers to frame relationships with software vendors like Procore and OpenSpace as partnerships, rather than transactions.
“We collaborate closely with our tech partners, going beyond initial implementation. We believe in open communication, ongoing support, and leveraging the resources they provide. The greatest value, however, comes from their openness to feedback.
“With our tech partners, we act as the voice of the customer, sharing insights from our field teams to identify missing features and collaborate on solutions. This win-win collaboration is essential for long-term tool usage and continued success.”

Listening to the Field
Collecting and prioritizing feedback is a critical part of Suffolk’s tech implementation strategy. With hundreds of active projects, listening at scale requires structure. Suffolk relies on regional CTD Associates, advisory groups, IT ticket reviews, and pilot programs to gather insights from the field.
Those insights are distilled into themes, prioritized, and then shared with software partners to improve their tools and workflows.
“Gathering feedback from hundreds of projects can be a significant and time-consuming endeavor. To manage this, we employ several channels.
Our regional Construction Technology Department (CTD) group is one of the key channels for feedback. These individuals are embedded in our regions and are responsible for collecting and communicating feedback from our teams.
We also receive feedback through our IT department's ticketing system. We collaborate with IT to review these tickets, identify trends and common themes related to the tools we support.
My role then involves synthesizing all this feedback to identify common themes, prioritize the most relevant and impactful insights, and relay this information to our vendors and partners.”

Suffolk’s comprehensive feedback loop ensures that innovation isn’t just “top-down,” but shaped by the people who use the tools every day. Felipe calls it “turning feedback into real impact.”
A Fluid Approach to Rollout
When it comes to rollout – actual implementation of new technology – Suffolk takes a measured approach that is driven by the situation.
The journey to buy-in and adoption isn’t always predictable. It requires a phased approach, the timeline for which needs to adapt to the type of technology, the project scope and the metrics for success. Suffolk uses pilot programs to test and validate novel technology to ensure they can actually deliver on the promise before they scale it across the organization.
"A pilot program might take two to four months to demonstrate value. However, once scaled, adoption can accelerate rapidly, potentially achieving widespread use in under six months. Alternatively, it can be a slower process if foundational elements are still being established across projects.
The approach to implementation also influences the timeline. A mandatory and immediate rollout can be faster, though it may encounter some pushback. Another strategy is a phased rollout to new projects, gradually building a critical mass of users as new projects come online.”

The Future: Leaning into AI & Robotics
Looking ahead, Felipe sees two technologies poised to redefine construction: artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
On the AI side, he envisions both front-end AI – interactive agents and search tools that workers actively engage with – and back-end AI, which silently improves workflows without users even realizing it.
“Looking ahead to the next 10 to 15 years, two areas particularly excite me.
First, AI. I'm thrilled to see how we'll enable AI processes and workflows to enhance the building experience and expand the capabilities of future technologies.
I see two main aspects of AI: Front-end AI, which we’ll interact with directly (agents, search AI, etc.), and back-end AI, which will make workflows more efficient without us even realizing we're interacting with it. We're already seeing hints of this in some current technologies."

Robotics, meanwhile, is rapidly moving from concept to reality. Felipe points to experiments in bricklaying, autonomous equipment, and teleoperated systems for dangerous environments. While barriers remain, especially around hardware costs, he’s confident adoption will accelerate.
“The second exciting area is robotics. I believe that within the next decade, we'll see a significant inflection point in the adoption and use of robotics in the field. The cost of robotics will decrease, and implementation will become easier.
We're already experimenting with and using some robotics technologies in the field, with very positive and exciting results. While there are still some barriers, particularly with hardware, these will diminish over time.
I'm very excited to see more autonomous robots and teleoperators for dangerous tasks emerge in the field. Advances in robotics are definitely coming, and I'm eager to be a part of it.”

Inspiring the Next Generation
For Felipe, one of the most exciting parts of his role is inspiring young professionals to see construction as more than hard hats and heavy machinery.
“I'm a strong advocate for the idea that construction isn't just about the building, architecture, or engineering fields. There's a vast support industry that makes the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) sector thrive. While many initially think of fieldwork, there are immense opportunities in construction technology.
My advice to young people is to look beyond the obvious. We urgently need people in technology to drive the future of construction over the next 10, 20, or 30 years. There are numerous opportunities and it's a huge area to get involved in.
We're exploring how to integrate this new world of AI and data science into construction. The opportunities are truly limitless. We're constantly seeking ways to leverage and utilize our data.
Construction is an industry with an abundance of available data, but we often don't use it effectively. We may lack optimal processes at the outset to capture the right data and then make it actionable. At Suffolk, we've embarked on a data journey to ensure our data lakes and captured data are accurate and useful for making and driving decisions in the field."

By combining structured adoption, meaningful partnerships, and a vision for AI and robotics, Suffolk is proving that the industry can redefine what’s possible.
