Transitioning energy operations to achieve carbon neutrality

ENGIE partnered with Procore to boost efficiency, standardise processes and ensure safety across renewable energy projects like Vilvoorde BESS – one of Europe’s largest battery parks.

The Challenge

As the renewable energy landscape evolves, ENGIE faced the pressing challenge of integrating large-scale battery storage solutions to enhance grid stability and support the increasing demand for clean energy. The Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), with a capacity of 200 MW, was designed to address these challenges. However, managing such a complex project required a robust system for coordination across multiple teams and locations.

The Results

  • Efficiency gains: ENGIE, today, manages over 100 projects simultaneously, significantly boosting productivity
  • Safety milestones: the Vilvoorde BESS project achieved over 600 days without lost-time injuries, reflecting a strong commitment to safety
  • Operational impact: the Vilvoorde BESS is set to provide 800 megawatt-hours of energy, enough to power approximately 96,000 homes, with the first 100 MW expected to be operational by September 2025

Our ambition with Procore is to facilitate the daily activities of our teams, helping them capture and capitalise on project-related events efficiently.

Spotlight: Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

The growing share of renewable generation causes fluctuations to the electricity supply, which makes it more and more difficult for the electrical grid operators to guarantee the grid stability. That’s why large-scale battery storages, such as the Vilvoorde BESS project, play a critical role in balancing these fluctuations.

The Vilvoorde BESS project is ENGIE’s largest battery project in Europe, with an installed capacity of 200 MW. This project is pivotal in supporting the stability of the electrical grid amidst the growing share of renewable energy generation.

Adriatik Qerimani, the project manager for the Vilvoorde BESS project, emphasises the importance of the project, stating: ‘As we see the climate change happening, I want to contribute to accelerating the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy through more environmentally friendly solutions.’

The Vilvoorde BESS project is fully being built using Procore. Thanks to the platform, Adriatik noted: ‘We gained four weeks on our project schedule, allowing us to start the manufacturing of the battery containers earlier.’

The BESS will enable the storage of 800 megawatt-hours of energy, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 96,000 homes, and will inject energy back into the grid during peak demand.

Embracing digital transformation with Procore

ENGIE’s commitment to technology highlights the necessity of innovative solutions that drive efficiency in the renewable energy sector. By using Procore’s data analytics and advanced project management tools, ENGIE enhances its operational capabilities, ensuring that projects are executed with precision and agility.

The collaboration with Procore has fundamentally transformed how ENGIE manages its projects. Utilising Procore’s platform has led to significant improvements in project visibility and communication. The ability to track progress in real time empowers teams to make informed decisions quickly, contributing to successful project outcomes. Boris Jimenez, responsible for methods and tools for renewable energy projects, noted:

‘Procore has allowed us to operationalise our processes, standardising project management and improving collaboration among teams.’

Furthermore, ENGIE has recognised that one of Procore’s key advantages is its ability to standardise practices across various projects and geographies.

‘Procore has become an essential tool for project managers, facilitating the tracking of activities and events on site. This information is crucial for office teams, enabling them to assist field teams in resolving issues and anticipating potential challenges.’

The integration of Procore has streamlined communication between site and office teams, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances project delivery. By centralising information, Procore allows various stakeholders to work together seamlessly, improving the flow of data and decision-making processes.

Transformative results thanks to a seamless integration

At the start of the integration, ENGIE first identified project-specific challenges and necessary tools, which allowed teams to quickly recognise Procore’s value, followed by a progressive deployment that expanded the use of Procore’s tools while providing tailored support for different countries and user groups.

‘By focusing on our teams’ specific needs, we demonstrated Procore’s value quickly, building confidence and encouraging adoption.’

Laetitia Perrier Project, Implementation Director

The integration has streamlined processes, such as centralising inspection checklists in multiple languages, reducing reliance on emails and spreadsheets.

With Procore now deployed globally and more than 2,000 active users, ENGIE has seen transformative results. The platform centralises project data, laying the groundwork for future initiatives. The integration of artificial intelligence with Procore Assist will further enhance data utilisation, enabling teams to use historical information for improved decision-making.

Ludovic Quesnelle, Group Digital Solutions VP, highlighted the potential:

‘Centralising our project data allows us to learn from past experiences, which will be invaluable for future projects.’

In summary, the successful integration of Procore has streamlined ENGIE’s project management processes and fostered a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, showcasing how strategic partnerships can lead to transformative outcomes in the renewable energy sector.
