The Challenge

As the renewable energy landscape evolves, ENGIE faced the pressing challenge of integrating large-scale battery storage solutions to enhance grid stability and support the increasing demand for clean energy. The Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), with a capacity of 200MW, was designed to address these challenges. However, managing such a complex project required a robust system for coordination across multiple teams and locations.

Spotlight: Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

The growing share of renewable generation causes fluctuations to the electricity supply, which makes it more and more difficult for the electrical grid operators to guarantee the grid stability. That's why large scale battery storages, like the Vilvoorde BESS project play a critical role in balancing these fluctuations.

The Vilvoorde BESS project is ENGIE's largest battery project in Europe, with an installed capacity of 200MW. This project is pivotal in supporting the stability of the electrical grid amidst the growing share of renewable energy generation.

Adriatik Qerimani, the project manager for Vilvoorde BESS project, emphasizes the importance of the project, stating: “As we see the climate change happening, I want to contribute to accelerating the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy through more environmentally friendly solutions.”

The Vilvoorde BESS project is fully being built using Procore. Thanks to the platform, Adriatik noted: “We gained four weeks on our project schedule, allowing us to start the manufacturing of the battery containers earlier.”

The BESS will enable the storage of 800 megawatt-hours of energy, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 96,000 homes, and will inject energy back into the grid during peak demand.
