Common Data Environment

CDE stands for Common Data Environment. In construction, it's a governed digital space where all project information – including BIM models, drawings and documents – is collected, managed, and shared across the project team. A CDE helps every stakeholder work from the latest approved data throughout the building lifecycle.

A common data environment platform is the information management system at the heart of a construction project. Unlike a basic cloud storage folder, a CDE platform automates the review, approval, and distribution of project information through four defined workflow states: Work in Progress (WIP), Shared, Published, and Archived. It enforces version control so site teams don't build from outdated drawings, applies role-based permissions to support data integrity, and generates an unalterable audit trail that supports compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

The Building Safety Act requires a 'golden thread' of digital information that is accurate, accessible, and maintained throughout a building's lifecycle. A CDE provides the infrastructure to capture every decision - from approved design through to handover - in a traceable, auditable record. This helps make the right information available to the right people at the right time, supporting the safety and accountability standards required by the Building Safety Regulator.

Data ownership in a common data environment depends on the project contract, but the platform should enable each party - owners, main contractors, and subcontractors - to access only the information relevant to their role. For regulated projects under the Building Safety Act, the building owner holds ultimate responsibility for the Golden Thread of safety information, which must remain accessible and defensible throughout the asset's lifecycle.
