Inside the NSW Data Centre Policy – What the New Rules Mean for Getting Projects Approved

On 17 August 2026, the NSW Government released a new policy for data centres. Backed by fresh guidelines, energy reforms, and a review of water pricing, it is designed to fast-track the projects that meet it and slow down the ones that don't.

For anyone building, developing, financing, or supplying this sector, the rules have changed. Data centre projects that meet the new energy and water efficiency targets, demonstrate responsible community impact management, and back their claims with evidence can be assessed by the NSW Government within 75 days.
