Designing & Building: Scaling a Single Ecosystem for CDs and Model-Based Shop Drawings

In 2015, Gilbane’s VDC Team in New England initiated a requirement across every project with a scope volume number exceeding $30m. The team mandated that all MEP trade contractors must use the design to fabrication processes of Revit to produce their model-based-shop-drawing-delivery process. Now, in 2019, collaborating with their Preconstruction Department, they've implemented this model-based process across all jobs under $30m that require their services, particularly the Special Projects/Interiors market in Boston.

This talk will discuss how Gilbane's team has applied these methods to the shop drawing production process on various smaller projects. By defining new models of success, their approach leverages the efforts of designers and the resources of Revit. They will illustrate how their VDC Team has set a new model-based shop drawing production standard for their trade partners and how this process is intrinsically tied to past, present, and future scalable design build projects at Gilbane.

The Economics of Attracting and Retaining Female Talent in Construction

Construction is facing a massive labor shortage which is driving up costs and reducing profits. Despite major ambitions to take on more projects, construction companies face the reality that they must continuously "do more with less" – taking on more projects with fewer people. Contemporaneously, females represent a mere 9.1% of the construction workforce – there is a massive opportunity for companies to recruit and retain female talent to help bridge the labour gap.

Project Data Collaboration: Who Owns My Data?

Increasingly, GCs and owners are requiring contractors to report project data (RFIs, daily logs, etc.) directly to their project management system. This can result in data exchange requirements from a GC using one system to an owner using a completely different system. For AEC companies to remain competitive, they must learn to take control of their project data and exchange it in a secure and efficient manner.

Recently, ELECTRI International funded industry research to analyze the capability of software integrating RFI data between the electrical contractor and their project client.

This session brings together a panel of industry and technology perspectives to discuss the findings of the research and to understand the purpose behind new project data collaboration requirements. The panel will also address the role of people, process, and technology to solve the challenges and misconceptions when accessing and exchanging project data.

Women, Inclusion, & Diversity: We know the why, now let's talk how

But why is the needle stuck at only 9% women? This panel will look at specific examples of what is actually being done by sharing successes, failures, and strategies on how to address these topics beyond the more common ERGs, conferences, and mandatory training. Leading People Out of the Box

One of the toughest leadership challenges is getting others to break out of conventional thinking in order to solve problems or create new opportunities. Simply telling people to “think outside the box” usually causes people to shut down. When driving change or seeking innovation, leaders must help others recognize their innate creative ability and channel that into purposeful problem solving. When it comes to driving innovative workplace cultures, leaders must remember that creativity is not a talent; it’s a muscle; and that innovation is not magic; it’s a process.
