In many ways masonry is simpler than other construction methods. It is also more efficient, as each unit takes up little space. It is generally considered a safer method of building than other methods because all of the debris and potential issues (such as fires and explosions) can be contained within the unit itself instead of spreading outside of it. Additionally, since masonry is made from units of smaller components (timbers and boards) there is less chance for damage in the event of an earthquake or hurricane.
